- W2892056948 abstract "The most widely cultivated tropical red seaweeds are of the genera Kappaphycus, Eucheuma, and Gracilaria, which enter commerce as raw materials for hydrocolloid manufacture. Marine hydrocolloid applications have manifested market growth on the order of 2% per annum over the past two decades, so the markets for tropical red seaweeds have virtually reached a plateau. This situation is unacceptable to private and public organizations with vested interests in undertaking major expansion of tropical seaweed production. Seaweed concentrates (SWC) for agricultural applications provide markets for major expansion in seaweed production. SWC efficacy in agriculture is known to the point where markets are developing for standardized SWC products. Processes are also being developed for conversion of red seaweed biomass to renewable chemicals and biofuels. High-volume applications such as SWC, renewable chemicals, and petroleum replacement will require major increases in red seaweed biomass production. Means are being developed so robust agronomy systems can be placed in zones where the constraints of wind, tide, and wave action can be balanced with the need for bringing sequestered deep-sea nutrients to ocean photic zones where they can be assimilated and utilized by macroalgae." @default.
