- W2892065599 abstract "Knowledge in quantitative genetic architecture of sexual size dimorphism for growth-related traits can help to reduce production costs per unit of culture, and increase productivity and revenue for aquaculture enterprises. Analysis of the published information showed significant differences in sexual size dimorphism (SSD) between major tilapia species (12–48%), and within a species such as Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (16–31%). The magnitude of the SSD difference among species or strains/populations within a species varied with culture environments. Estimates of heritability (h 2) carried out separately for female and male body weight indicated that there were no significant differences between the two sexes (h 2 = 0.30 in females vs. 0.32 in males). The genetic correlations between sexes for the body trait studied were close to unity (0.91–0.96), indicating that there was no sex by genotype interaction. There were also no differences in heritability and genetic correlations for female and male body weight in diverse culture environments (saline vs. freshwater). These results suggest that there are no sex-specific additive genetic (co)-variances to exploit by selection, and that there is no need to treat trait expressions in the two sexes as different traits in genetic improvement programs. In addition to the theoretical prediction of selection response based on the co-variance components, realized genetic changes in body weight of females and males to selection for high growth were similar. This chapter also discusses issues and prospects for future research to further understand quantitative genetic basis of SSD." @default.
