- W2892072354 abstract "The purpose of this chapter is to present a theoretical model of seemingly salient distal, causal, and exacerbating contributors to instances ofdevelopmental stuttering in children. Within the conceptual frameworkprovided by this model, the authors describe the possible relation to stuttering of the nontrivial processes of speech, language, experience, andemotions. Distal contributors to stuttering are considered to beantecedent conditions, events, or variables that serve as the foundation forproximal variables that actually trigger particular instances of stuttering.Proximal contributors to stuttering are hypothesized to be those variablesthat occur somewhere between a person’s thoughts and overt behavior, inessence, the domain of speech planning and production. Speech planningand production may be influenced by exacerbating contributors such asemotional reactivity (arousal) and regulation (coping). Emotional reactivity and regulation are considered as contributors to quantitative and qualitative changes in both the processes and the end-products of proximalcontributors. Effects of experience are thought to impact the “paths ofinfluence” between emotional and speech-language planning and produc-tion. In the early stages of stuttering, for most children, proximal contributors are speculated to create instances of stuttering with little or noemotional exacerbation/regulation; however, with development, emotional processes may exacerbate stuttering, a process strongly influenced bythe effects of experience. Whereas the model attempts to account for central tendencies, it recognizes the presence of individual differences inspeech-language planning/production abilities, emotional reactivity/regulation, learning histories and environmental expression of these abilities. In general, however, the model’s distinction between variables that cause, versus variables that exacerbate, stuttering seemingly provides a realisticconceptualization of the mosaic of factors that initiate stuttering as wellas maintain and aggravate it." @default.
