- W2892085149 abstract "As I think of the whirlwind of events taking place that affect teaching, learning, and children’s school readiness and success, I find the need for a greater focus on public health in schools at an all-time high in the United States. Stewards of public health investigate and monitor communities for potential health-related problems; they help mobilize community resources and partnerships, link people to services, and help to formulate policies to improve community health. Childhood obesity and nutrition in schools, school safety, youth suicide, behavioral health, and school readiness are demonstrated public health challenges facing many of the nation’s school systems (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011; Quinn et al., 2018). From a public health perspective, one of the most urgent needs deserving acute focus by school systems and related services personnel is the present-day national opioid crisis and its effects on school-age children and youths. Opioid abuse is an enormous problem in the United States. Although opioid abuse depends heavily on the illegal drug trade, it is estimated that one-third of opioid prescriptions are being abused. Nationwide, opioids kill more people annually than car crashes (Carpenter, 2018). “Prescription and illicit opioids combined have killed more than 300,000 Americans since 2000. Ninety-one Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. This catastrophe of opioid addiction and deaths has fueled a heartbreaking increase of children in crisis” (Edelman, 2017, p. 1)." @default.
