Up to now, no self-administered questionnaire was validated in French to assess food craving. This study's main objective was to test the psychometric properties of a French version of the Food Cravings Questionnaire-Trait-reduced (FCQ-T-r), by establishing its factor structure, internal consistency, and construct validity with other food-related measures and BMI in a non-clinical sample. This cross-sectional study conducted between January 2017 and March 2017 in a non-clinical population was based on an internet-based survey and included 372 subjects. We assessed age, gender, current Body Mass Index (BMI), previous maximal BMI, food craving (French FCQ-T-r obtained after translation, blind back-translation and adaptation of the final version as appropriate), DSM-5 food addiction (Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0: YFAS 2.0), emotional eating, external eating and cognitive restraint (Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire: DEBQ). The French FCQ-T-r had a one-factor structure (that explained 58 % of the total variance) with high factor loadings for all items (> 0.50), and with an excellent internal consistency (α = 0.95). Total FCQ-T-r score was associated with being female (P < 0.05), higher current BMI (P < 0.001) and previous maximal BMI (r = 0.30; P < 0.001), food addiction diagnosis and number of food addiction symptoms (Ps < 0.001), existence of the YFAS 2.0 craving criteria (P < 0.001) and higher external eating (r = 0.74; P < 0.001), emotional eating (r = 0.71; P < 0.001) and restrained eating (r = 0.27; P < 0.001). The association between craving and BMI was fully mediated by emotional eating (P < 0.001), but not by restrained eating or external eating. The French version of the FCQ-T-r has psychometric properties comparable to its original version with a one-factor structure. The shortness of the FCQ-T-r (15 items) makes it a quick and an easy-to-use self-administered questionnaire in order to assess food craving and to monitor its change after treatment in clinical populations." @default.
