- W2892091159 abstract "This chapter is very much a product of the times. Had this book been written a half century ago, no one would have thought to have included such achapter in it. It was believed at the time that signing was at best a “broken”form of English on the hands, and at worst, mere hand-waving gestures.Signing therefore would not have been included in a book discussing linguistics. With the publication of Stokoe’s (1960) groundbreaking book SignLanguage Structures, linguists gradually began to recognize American SignLanguage, or ASL, as a language in its own right. It has taken decades forthis view of ASL to become widespread. Indeed, had the book you are holding been published as late as the 1990s, at least half of this chapter wouldhave been devoted to providing evidence that ASL is a real language, andthat it is distinct from English. The rest of the chapter would have beenused in a justification of the use of ASL1 with Deaf2 students. However, thecurrent climate is such that we can finally assume as background knowledge that ASL is indeed a language. The space thereby freed up can now bedevoted to topics that are currently less widely known; specifically, howthe use of sign in the classroom can benefit other populations of students." @default.
