A life partnership with composerJohn Cage (which began in the 1940s and ended only with the composer’s deathin 1992) spanned many groundbreaking collaborations, and in 1953 he founded theMerce CunninghamDance Company as a forum for new concepts of dance. Cage andCunningham agreed that although dance and music might occur at the same timein the same performance, they could be created independently of each other,enabling the audience to forge their own connections between the heard and the seen.They also eschewed conventional narratives, even the conventional logic, of danceperformances, and for some works, such as Suite by Chance (1953), introduced“chance” procedures-although the fact that these procedures are decided by thecomposer has given them a controversial relationship to improvisation.
