- W2892247612 abstract "This chapter summarizes the current knowledge of hydraulic and chemical coupling associated with CO2 injection in saline aquifer storage sites developed from field observations, laboratory studies, and numerical modeling studies. Injection of CO2 in saline aquifers can lead to various processes, including coupled fluid flow and geochemical interactions. Interactions between CO2, in situ brine and solids can lead to geochemical interactions that could potentially affect porosity and permeability through dissolution and precipitation of minerals which in turn could affect fluid flow. The interactions and processes take place at multiple spatial as well as timescales and can have implications on migration and fate of CO2 in the near term and long term. For example, wellbore injectivity can be altered due to near-wellbore precipitation. Movement of CO2 in the reservoir can be influenced by potential changes in relative permeability characteristics of reservoir rocks due to geochemical interactions. Migration of CO2 and/or brine through fractures in wellbore cements or caprocks as well as faults could either be limited because of self-sealing via precipitation or enhanced because of dissolution." @default.
