- W2892362287 abstract "Abstract To begin to transition to more sustainable methods of food waste management, it is necessary to first understand the advantages and disadvantages of incumbent technologies that are currently being used, and how the phase of the food waste material (solid, liquid, or packaged) influences the options that are technically viable. Some of the existing methods, including food donation, animal feed production, and composting, are considered to offer beneficial use pathways for food waste materials. However, in most cases, these pathways require a high level of waste homogeneity and purity, thus imposing practical limits on how much waste material can be managed. Other conventional methods, including wastewater treatment, incineration and landfilling, are generally considered much less sustainable and environmentally favorable. However, because these technologies have few if any restrictions on the types of waste processed, they have been deployed at large scale to achieve relatively low cost. In all cases, it is necessary to comprehend the full spectrum of environmental, economic, and social impacts to ensure that application of alternative food waste management technologies achieves the intended sustainability goals." @default.
