- W2892588873 abstract "Walking through the streets of Nishi-Shinjuku 7-chome (East Shinjuku 7th district) in Tōkyō, one encounters several music stores displaying large posters of bands characterized by men with an androgynous appearance, flamboyant and colorful hairstyles, lavish make-up, and extravagant feminine-looking clothing. Such bands represent a pop-music genre known as visual-kei (bijuaru-kei: “visual style”),1 which is Japanese rock music that is defined primarily by its visual signifiers and to some extent by its musical elements (cf. Kawamoto 2013). Visiting stores in Shinjuku 7-chome, such as Closet Child, Like an Edison, Club Indies, or Pure Sound, one will see, not only a plethora of Japanese visual-kei CDs, DVDs, and band memorabilia, but also fashion and accessories for men and women who form visual-kei’s fan base. During one visit to this downtown neighborhood in 2014, the authors were struck by not only the number of visual-kei stores in this part of the bustling district of metropolitan Tōkyō, but also the large number of fans visiting the location, their queuing to see bands who were launching new recordings, and the amount of visual-kei artifacts that accompanied the music. Indeed, it is the visual aspect of the style, as defined by its name, that offers one way of interpreting visual-kei’s raison d’etre (e.g., Craig 2000)." @default.
