- W2892683598 abstract "Abstract Several projects to analyze microbial diversity in environmental settings were conducted so far, most of them using metagenomic approaches based on single genes, such as the rRNA 16S gene, or using whole metagenome sequencing. Despite the difficulty to identify species never described before, the bioinformatics tools are increasingly robust allowing large scale analysis and consequently improving the detection of new taxa. Among the terrestrial ecosystems, the Amazon is known as one of the most diverse. It’s high and constant temperature as well as its high humidity lead to the emergence of nutrient-rich microhabitats such as plants, coastal deltas, organic or inorganic soils, among others. In this context, an increase in the level of resistance to antibiotics of environmental isolates is a public health concern since they can directly impact the human and animal health. In this chapter, we aim to present the state of the art of the microbial diversity in the Brazilian Amazon with further focus on the importance of environmental antibiotic resistance to public health. We also present the results of a case study that was conducted in Lake Agua Preta, near the city of Belem, Brazilian Amazon. Seventeen strains suggestive for Escherichia coli were isolated and showed resistance to penicillins, such as amoxicillin and ampicillin, and 70.5% showed intermediate resistance to the first-generation cephalosporin Cefalotin. No strains resistant to last-resorts beta-lactams were detected." @default.
