- W2892801163 abstract "Plant molecular geneticist Jonathan D. G. Jones has made seminal contributions to understanding mechanisms underlying resistance to plant disease. A group leader at The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich, United Kingdom, Jones was among the first to isolate and characterize disease resistance genes. His discovery of receptor-like proteins (RLPs) preceded discovery of leucine-rich repeat innate immune receptors in animals. Jones’ work also revealed intracellular nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) immune receptors, which often function in pairs to detect pathogen molecules, known as effector proteins, to activate defense. In his Inaugural Article (1), Jones, who in 2015 was elected as foreign associate to the National Academy of Sciences, identifies critical steps in plant NLR-mediated disease resistance. These and related findings are being applied to field trials of crops genetically modified for disease resistance. Such transgenic crops hold promise for increasing yield, decreasing agrochemical use, and reducing the environmental impact of agriculture.Jonathan D. G. Jones. As a youth, Jones was torn between studying history and chemistry. “Since I’d fallen in love with the periodic table, and history seemed a mass of unconnected facts, I chose chemistry,” Jones says. He excelled in the subject, and also in math and physics, and entered Cambridge University to study natural sciences in 1972.Jones’ most influential undergraduate professor was botanist Harold Whitehouse. “He communicated, in a very rigorous way, the many outstanding mysteries in plant and other genetics, including the discovery of transposable genetic elements by cytogeneticist Barbara McClintock,” Jones says. Believing that plant science could …" @default.
