- W2892801961 abstract "This chapter shows that muscle and bone conform to the classical definition of endocrine organs. In contrast to the simplistic view that only bones and muscles are part of the musculoskeletal (MSK), the system is composed of bones, blood vessels, cartilage, joints, ligaments, nerves, skeletal muscles, tendons, and other connective tissues. The chapter focuses on the connective tissues, Sharpey's fibers or perforated fibers, which may provide a conduit for transport of factors between bones and muscles. It addresses the commonly asked question of how factors from one tissue reach another tissue if there are impermeable barriers to transport of molecules in the organism. The chapter draws from both in vitro cell and in vivo animal models of bone-muscle cross-talk as well as clinical human situations that exemplify the applicability of bone-muscle interactions." @default.
