- W2892913425 abstract "Abstract This chapter reviews the use of bioactive glasses in various types of repair to the periodontium. This is the complex collection of tissues that supports the teeth, and which can be damaged by periodontal disease. Rampart periodontitis causes bone loss, tooth loosening, and eventual tooth loss, and the condition can be reversed by placing bioactive glass, typically the original 45S5 formulation (Bioglass) at the defect site, either as free particles or compounded into a putty with degradable matrix substances. Clinical outcomes with this approach have been found to be very good. In a similar way, bioactive glass has also been used to repair so-called furcation defects, that is, bone loss due to infection at the intersection of the roots in multirooted teeth. Good clinical outcomes have been obtained with this treatment. Lastly, bioactive glass has been used in association with metallic implants. This has involved both placement of the glass into defects to stimulate bone growth prior to placing implants and the use of bioactive glass as coatings for metallic implants. The latter application is aimed at improving retention and requires modification to the glass formulation in order to prevent stresses and subsequent cracking of the coating due to differing thermal properties from the supporting metal implant. Results of this approach are excellent, and these materials are significantly more effective as coatings than hydroxyapatite." @default.
