• W2892946688 abstract "Abstract In this study, we examine the relationship between SES and life expectancy at birth for 159 nations at three points in time, 1970, 1990, and 2010. This chapter examines the concept of a biological warranty and its “extended operation” as well as a social warranty in regard to life expectancy at birth. In so doing, we employ Per Capita Gross Domestic Product (PCGDP) as an index of SES, which comprises our analysis. We here use a descriptive approach to examine changes in life expectancy at birth (e0) relative to PCGDP, our SES Index. To do this, we organized the 159 countries into quartiles based on PCGDP at each of three points in time, 1970, 1990, and 2010 and looked at summary measures of change over time by SES quartile. In summary, we find that at a national level, evidence suggests that the populations in the wealthiest countries may be approaching the extended operation limit, but are not yet there. This may be due to within-population heterogeneity in regard to e0. We find that the gap of about 19 years in e0 between the populations in the wealthiest populations and the poorest in 1970 persisted to 2010. In spite of technology and knowledge transfers concerning the reduction of mortality, the persistent gap suggests that a social warranty is operating, a barrier difficult to surmount without increases in the resources that are indexed by PCGDP and other SES indicators." @default.
