- W289343180 abstract "The white rot fungus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, is able to mineralize a number of environmentally persistent organochlorides such as 1,1-Bis(4-chlorophenyl) 2,2,2-trichloroethane (DDT), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo[p]dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD), Lindane (1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane), and pentachlorophenol (PCP). Studies suggest that the ability to degrade these compounds is dependent upon the lignin degrading system of this fungus. For example, we have shown that, like 14C-lignin mineralization, mineralization of 14C-pentachlorophenol (14C-PCP) and 14C-DDT is promoted in nutrient nitrogen deficient cultures of P. chrysosporium whereas their mineralization is suppressed in nutrient nitrogen sufficient cultures. Also, the temporal onset and disappearance of both 14C-PCP and 14C-DDT mineralization appeared similar to that observed for 14C-lignin, thus suggesting that the same general degradative system may be responsible. It is suggested that the ability of P. chrysosporium to mineralize such a wide variety of organochlorides may make this fungus a useful microorganism for use in the biological treatment of contaminated soils, sediments and aqueous wastes when used in appropriate aerated waste treatment systems." @default.
