- W2893674471 abstract "The relevance of high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology for energy transmission has significantly increased during the last decades. As a key component, extruded cable systems are increasingly used in this transmission technology. Field distribution within HVDC cables is subjected to several influential factors and closely linked to the conductivity of the applied materials. As conductivity of the implemented materials (e.g., polymers) is among others dependent on temperature and electrical field strength, circular references for the determination of the electric field distribution occur. Consequently, the calculation of electric fields within HVDC cables is complex and motivates numerical simulation. Considering the factors above, a generic and fully parametrised cable simulation framework is implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics and presented in this paper. Dependencies of electrical conductivity are applied based on empirical equations considering electric field distribution and the thermal gradient. Moreover, all model parameters such as the geometric data, the material properties, and the voltage and temperature of the conductor may be chosen with respect to demanded calculations." @default.
