- W2893806750 abstract "Nerves have long been established to terminate within bone, with significant innervation observed in the periosteum, medullary cavity, and cortical bone. This chapter examines the existing anatomical evidence for innervation of bone. It explores how innervation is modulated under physiological and pathological conditions. The chapter focuses on recent literature that has expanded the understanding of how bone cells are influenced by local neuronal signals. It suggests that the nervous system also interacts with bone indirectly via endocrine pathways. The chapter also focuses primarily on evidence for peripheral nerves interacting directly with bone to modulate remodeling. The way in which peripheral nerves modulate bone homeostasis is circumstance-dependent, with bone innervation being responsible for bone pain, maintenance of the hematopoietic niche, and response to mechanical loading. Calcitonin gene-related peptide is abundant in sensory neurons, with roles in pain transmission and vasodilation." @default.
