- W2893854632 abstract "Sexual difficulties, which are disturbances in at least one of the phases of the sexual response cycle (i.e. excitement, arousal, and orgasm), are reported in half of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and can lead to feelings of anxiety and distress. However, up to 90% of cardiovascular care nurses neither assess sexual difficulties nor provide sexual counseling in CAD patients as they report lacking knowledge and confidence to do so. To synthesize available evidence regarding sexual difficulties in CAD patients and to provide guidance for sexual counseling in cardiovascular care nurses. We performed a narrative literature review to identify relevant clinical practice guidelines, systematic reviews, primary studies, and grey literature. Data related to the resumption of sexual activities in CAD patients, assessment of sexual difficulties, treatment plan, and sexual counseling were extracted from the literature. CAD patients report information needs related to the proper time to resume sexual activities, symptoms to pay attention to, and the impact of CAD and of the associated pharmacotherapy. Assessing the biological (e.g. comorbidities, disabilities), social (e.g. culture, family issues), and psychological (e.g. self-esteem, anxiety and depressive symptoms) components of sexuality is required from the cardiovascular care nurse in order to provide sexual counseling. This presentation will synthesize the sexual difficulties reported by CAD patients and the strategies to enhance sexual counseling provided by cardiovascular care nurses. Assessing sexual difficulties can prevent feelings of anxiety and distress associated with sexuality in CAD patients." @default.
