- W289386120 abstract "In Ohio, a toddler comes bounding in the door, stops and slows down so that the gramma with a walker next to him doesn't trip. The two exchange smiles and greetings as they head toward a circle of child- and adult-sized chairs in the center of the room. Through a window in one corner of the activity room, one can see babies being held securely by other clients of the adult day services center. The sounds of the children and young and older adults echos through the halls of this facility, which houses a Head Start program serving homeless children and an adult day services center serving frail elders and disabled younger adults. Participants interact daily-informally, in the hallways or in spur-of-the-moment walks around the facility, and in activities planned by an intergenerational coordinator. Staff say that a single moment of joy and security that occurs between a participant with Alzheimer's disease and a young child is so important, because a moment may be all the person with Alzheimer's knows and for the child, the security of a home is unknown. In Florida, a nurse's aide hugs her daughter goodbye and walks down the hall to her assigned station, while the little girl joins a group of nursing home residents engaged in an arts and crafts activity. Later, they will have lunch together. An older man sits in a lawn chair he has placed on the walkway between the childcare center and the assisted living facility. He greets each child as he or she leaves for the day and pauses to admire a precious painting or clay sculpture fashioned by the child. A childcare center, nursing home, and assisted living facility are all located on the same site. One receptionist sen7es all three, and all staff of the center, the nursing home, and the assisted living facility receive training that enables them to better understand the overall mission and work of those around them. Staff and participants say they feel that they are lucky to walk through the halls and see each generation. In Kentucky, a high school student stops to help an older adult with her lunch tray, then gets in line for his own serving. After lunch, the woman joins the boy's American history class and relates her experiences as a factory worker during World War II. Across town, a group of older adults eats lunch at a middle school, then proceeds to the computer lab, where they are taught how to use the computer by one of the 12-year-old students. These are examples of senior nutrition sites, which offer a convenient and stimulating location for older adults to receive a hot meal and provide the school with additional resources from the community. Teachers report that the program provides teenagers with numerous opportunities to develop a respect and caring concern for older people. The teachers say that social poise and self-confidence are developed through positive interactions between the students and their older adult volunteers. These Intergenerational Shared Site (IGSS) programs are but a few of over 28o across the country that are part of a growing trend. IGSS programs are those in which multiple generations receive ongoing services or participate in programs at the same site and generally interact through planned or informal intergenerational activities. An AARP survey identified over 70 different program models or combinations of programs serving young and old. The most common IGSS programs involve nursing homes, adult day services centers or senior centers combined with childcare centers and before- and after-school programs. …" @default.
