- W2893893853 abstract "Beyond: Andre Bleikasten, 1933-2009 Andre Bleikasten died on February 15,2009, agreatloss notonlyto the large familyofFaulkner scholars, but also to the French, European, and American academic landscape. For more than three decades, Andre has been an impressive intellectual, conversant with all schools of criticism, and above all with the classical and contemporary fiction ofEurope and America. Being trilingual (he knew German just as well as English), his openness and sensitivityto European and American fiction was remarkable, and widely recognizedbyhis peers. We all know his work on Faulkner, notably The Most Splendid Failure: Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, one ofthe most often quoted stud ies on the novel, and the translation and revi sion of his dissertation, The Ink of Melancholy: Faulkner’sNovelsfrom The Sound and the Fury to Light in August, also one ofthe classic studies on Faulkner. And his essays published almost world wide complete the scope ofhis manifold interests, including two fine studies of Flannery O’Connor B1^sten at the SAES/AFEA and Philip Roth for the VoixAmencames series at court of Geraldine Chouard. Belin (Paris). His most remarkable achievement maywell be his lastbook: William Faulkner: Une vie en romans, which deserves translation. It was recognized in France in the fall of2008, when Andre was already seriously ill, by having been awarded both the literary prize of FranceAmeriques and the prestigious Prix de l’Academie Francaise for biography. It is a dense, alert, finely written study of all the novels, representing the culmination ofAndre’s reflec tions on Faulkner. It does not usebiographical information to explain the novels, but rather sees the novels inscribed in the biography, making us discover both the writer William Faulkner and his masks through his fiction. Andre constantlykeeps this strategy at the cen ter ofhis exacting attention: the book is not a succession ofmonographs on the novels, nor is it an exhaustive biography, but rather a comprehensive and enlightening critical study of the overall work. It is the achievement of a lifetime’s fascinationwith Faulkner, a humanist approach, using all the resources ofcontemporary criticism so as to avoid any kind of sys tematic reading. Andre belonged to no school, except that ofgreat European culture. Coming only a fewyears after that ofMichel Gresset (1936-2005), Andre Bleikasten’s death deepens the mourning ofail who love Faulkner’s fiction. Francois Pitavy Universite de Bourgogne ..." @default.
