- W2894489387 abstract "This chapter provides a solid basis for any emergency and critical care veterinary nurse on the topics of fluid therapy, electrolyte disorders, and acid-base disturbances. This chapter provides a solid basis for any emergency and critical care veterinary nurse on the topics of fluid therapy, electrolyte disorders, and acid-base disturbances. Fluid therapy serves vital functions including ensuring euvolemia and adequate cardiac output, thus enhancing perfusion, affording daily maintenance fluid requirements to keep up with sensible and insensible physiological losses, replenishing dehydrated tissue, and to provide a method to correct electrolyte and acid-base disorders. Maintenance and monitoring a patient that is receiving fluid therapy requires a dedicated and knowledgeable veterinary nurse. The chapter describes the three broad categories of fluid therapy used in veterinary medicine: crystalloids, colloids, and blood products. It explains how electrolyte concentrations influence the patient, and how best to treat the disturbance. The chapter presents primary and secondary responses observed with acid-base disorders." @default.
