- W2894561867 abstract "SESSION TITLE: Advances in the Diagnosis of Lung Cancer SESSION TYPE: Original Investigations PRESENTED ON: 10/09/2018 02:30 PM - 03:30 PM PURPOSE: Spectrum analysis of ultrasound has proven to be effective in differentiating between benign and malignant lymph nodes in patients with lung cancer (CHEST 2016) and is capable of identifying small-sized malignant tumors in mice and rabbit xenograft models (WCBIP 2014). However, the utility of this technology for detection of malignant tumors in human lungs has not been clarified. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of spectrum analysis for detecting malignant lung tumors using resected human lung METHODS: Resected human lungs from patients with lung cancer were evaluated using a convex-probe ultrasonic broncho fiber videoscope (BF-UC180F, Olympus, Tokyo Japan) and a dedicated universal endoscopic ultrasound center (EU-Y0013, Olympus Tokyo Japan). Three spectrum parameters (midband-fit (dB), intercept (dB), and slope (dB/MHz)) were analyzed with a spectrum analysis software (TS Image Viewer: MAJ-Y0228, Olympus Tokyo Japan), and compared between the tumor and the normal lung tissue. RESULTS: Eighteen resected human lung (lobectomy; n = 17, segmentectomy; n = 1) from 18 patients (9 male and 9 female; mean age 68.5 years) were analyzed. Pathologic analysis confirmed malignancy (adenocarcinoma; n = 14, squamous cell carcinoma; n = 2, typical carcinoid; n = 2). The average spectral parameters (standard deviation) for midband-fit, intercept and slope were -47.7 (± 7.77), -56.5 (± 5.65) and 2.12 (± 0.74), respectively, in the tumor, and -30.9 (± 7.50), -37.7 (± 12.6 and 0.64 (± 1.40), respectively, in normal lung tissue. Tumors had a significantly lower midband-fit (p = 0.0001), lower intercept (p = 0.0001) and higher slope (p = 0.0012) than normal lung tissue. CONCLUSIONS: All three spectrum parameters (midband-fit, intercept and slope) showed a significant difference between lung tumors and normal lung tissue. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Spectrum analysis might be a feasible way to detect malignant tumors in human lung.
