- W2894721697 abstract "This article employs Augustine of Hippo's sermons to investigate his opinions on the interactions between masters and slaves in his diocese in North Africa. His frequent illustrations of God or Christ as the ideal master reveal an elaborate framework of criticism against slave-owners in his congregation. This article focuses on three vices in particular which Augustine portrayed as being common for a slaveholder (pride, greed, and lust), and each of these vices is contrasted with an event in which his congregation accuses him of the same vice. It is argued, furthermore, that the discourse between bishop and lay slave-owners epitomizes how Augustine's rhetoric of slavery attempts to undermine his congregation's ability to govern the church, and legitimize his own." @default.
