- W2894764651 abstract "Money laundering, seen as the sine qua non of organised crime in thecontemporary period, was an unspoken concept for criminologists inthe middle years of the twentieth century. Donald Cressey, one of themost ardent pursuers of organised crime in the academic discipline, didnot use the term. He was, however, well acquainted with its practice. He described in functional terms the role of the ‘money mover’, aperson or group of persons whose role is first to hide the source ofillegally obtained money and second to facilitate its re-introductioninto the banking system so that it can be put to work just like any otherform of capital (Cressey 1969: 234). Mary McIntosh noted, twentyfive years ago, that legitimate enterprises were a necessary part of theracketeer’s business concerns. Legitimate business ‘fronts’ provide away by which extortionate transactions can be disguised among aregular flow of uniform payments and she mentioned the provision oflaundry services first among the examples of types of businessenterprise that can be used, not only as a cover for criminal activity, butalso as a conduit through which money from the clandestine economycan be moved into the regions of the ‘upper world’ (McIntosh 1975:51). According to William Gilmore (1993) the term ‘moneylaundering’ entered popular usage during the 1970s, around the time ofthe Watergate scandal. Michael Sindona, the Vatican Banker involvedin the so-called Banco Ambrosiano affair of the mid-1980s, was able todefine the term succinctly as ‘switching dirty money to clean money’(quoted in Reid 1996: 207). Given the historical connection with thelaundry business noted by McIntosh, and the function of movingcriminal money so as to disguise its criminal origins described byCressey, it is perhaps not surprising that the term ‘money laundering’has come to be a part of the criminological lexicon." @default.
