- W2894828771 abstract "By definition, intensive care is care that must be provided on a minute-to-minute basis for a patient who is critically ill. Numerous reports in the literature detail the beneficial impact on clinical outcomes when patients are grouped based on severity of illness with the location of their care in the same area of the hospital. The rationale driving this model in an intensive care unit (ICU) is that the sickest patients are cared for by medical specialists trained in that area of medicine, the brightest nursing staff, and ancillary service providers with all of the appropriate technology to support their centrally located care. ICU designs that are in current use in the United States generally follow two basic models of organization, open ICU and closed ICU. Most obstetric ICU admissions occur in the postpartum period. A variety of comorbid conditions and obstetrical complications can result in the need for intensive care management." @default.
