- W2895045927 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter provides an overview of platelet. There are three major types of cell in the circulating blood: (1) the red cell, which is concerned mainly with oxygen transport; (2) the white cells, which are concerned with immunity and tissue repair, and (3) the platelet or thrombocyte, which is concerned with coagulation and hemostasis. When a blood vessel is severed or when the endothelial cells lining the lumen of the blood vessel are damaged, the platelets circulating in the blood are exposed to the subendothelial components of the vessel wall. Platelets immediately adhere to certain of these structures, and this initial adhesion is followed by the release reaction in which certain constituents of the platelet are expelled from its interior and the aggregation of other platelets to those already adhering to the subendothelium. Finally, membrane fusion occurs between adjacent platelets leading to viscous metamorphosis and the retraction of the clot under the influence of contractile proteins in the platelet. The platelet is apparently unique among cells in being formed by the fragmentation of its precursor rather than by the maturation of a more primitive cell; the megakaryocyte divides within the bone marrow, each megakaryocyte producing a total of about 2000 platelets. The internal structure of the platelet is quite complex and knowledge of it has been gained mainly from studies with the electron microscope." @default.
