Bronchoscopy assessment metrics, such as the Bronchoscopic Skills and Tasks Assessment Tool (BSTAT) has been used in a pedagogical framework for basic bronchoscopy. The goal of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between the Revised Purdue Spatial Visualization Tests: Visualization of Rotations (PSVT:R) and bronchoscopic performance, in novice bronchoscopists. METHODS: Fourteen medical students and medical residents were enrolled to receive an introductory bronchoscopy course. The course curriculum blueprint was structured after a standardized introduction to bronchoscopy course. This was followed by a baseline Revised PSVT:R, and BSTAT on a bronchoscopic simulator, which measured bronchoscopic metrics including airway wall collisions, percent of airways visualized and time. BSTAT scores were evaluated by interventional pulmonary faculty. RESULTS: Twelve of the enrolled participants completed both the Revised PSVT:R and the BSTAT on the bronchoscopic simulator. Spearman’s rho comparing the Revised PSVT:R to the number of airway wall collisions was -0.72 (p=0.008). There was no association between BSTAT score and Revised PSVT:R score, BSTAT score and airway wall collisions, BSTAT score and time to completion of bronchoscopy, or BSTAT score and percentage of airways explored. Time also did not correlate with percentage of airways examined or the number of collisions. CONCLUSIONS: The Revised PSVT:R may predict novice bronchoscopy psychomotor skills compared to BSTAT. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Baseline Revised PSVT:R scores may help us identify novice bronchoscopists who may need more or less intensive bronchoscopy training.
