- W2895058459 abstract "Literary biography came of age in the eighteenth century, between the death of Alexander Pope and the final works of Samuel Johnson, author of many writers’ lives and subject of the landmark text, James Boswell's Life of Johnson (1791). Pope scorned the life-writing industry pioneered by Edmund Curll, preferring discretion, control, and the epitaphic finality of the “good death” and posthumous Works. Yet Pope was also endlessly in the public eye, visible by deformity, controversial in behavior, literary and otherwise, and, in contrast to his literary friends, increasingly drawn to a form of carefully controlled poetic autobiography. This chapter examines these tensions, and shows how Popean biography, emerging from fractured beginnings, was unusually tightly woven into questions of canonical literary standing." @default.
