- W2895063884 abstract "Burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) often stand on a fence post or on top of a mound of dirt, bobbing their heads, looking at you with large yellow eyes, and standing tall on their long legs (color plate 10). Affectionately known as the “howdy owl,” burrowing owls are unique because they nest and roost in underground burrows (figure 12.1). Burrowing owls inhabit urban and suburban areas in North and South America1,2,3,4,5,6 and are often promoted by wildlife agencies as charismatic and harmless members of the local “watchable wildlife” community. They are generally popular and appreciated by nature enthusiasts. In much of their range, burrowing owls do not dig their burrows but rather depend on other burrowing animals (e.g., prairie dogs or ground squirrels) to provide the burrows that they call home. But burrowing owls will also use a variety of holes and crevasses in human-made structures. Adults use the burrows for protection from predators, for shade from the hot sun, and as a nest where they raise their young. Females lay up to 11 eggs in an underground chamber of the burrow. When the eggs hatch, the young owls stay safe below ground for several weeks. Adults defend their burrow and their chicks from predators and from intrusion by other burrowing owls. Nestlings also scare off predators by imitating a rattlesnake rattle,7 which helps deter would-be predators. Because they spend so much time deep underground in their burrows where carbon dioxide levels can be high, burrowing owls have adaptations to help them survive in a high carbon dioxide environment.8 It is safe to say that the life of the burrowing owl revolves around its burrow." @default.
