- W2895079175 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the immunological aspects of tumor transplantation. In earlier studies, it was found that tumors arising within genetically inbred strains of laboratory animals could be transplanted successfully, so that progressive tumor growth resulted, only to animals possessing certain dominant histocompatibility antigens in common with the tumor donor. It was subsequently found that the rejection of tumors by genetically incompatible hosts caused the latter to become actively immunized against the tumor in question. This immunity could be adoptively transferred by immunologically competent cell suspensions to further hosts. Many types of experimental tumor in animals have been shown to possess tumor-specific antigens, that is, antigens present in the malignant cells but absent from the corresponding normal cells of the host. Such specific antigens afford the point d'appui for the immunological resistance of host to its tumor. The chapter discusses the transplantation of tumors, and acceptance and rejection by the host. It also describes tumor-specific antigens." @default.
