- W2895172385 abstract "Soils contain globally significant stocks of C, but the mechanisms regulating the preservation and stability of soil C stocks are not well defined. The role of climate has long been implicated as a major driver of soil C stock variation, with rising temperatures associated with higher decomposition rates and therefore smaller C stocks. The role of minerals in directly regulating the size and stability of C stocks has only recently become a focus of interest as researchers seek out new mechanistic explanations for the observed variance in the distribution of C across soils. The complex interactions among climatic and soil mineral variables and how these mechanistic relationships will change under different climate change scenarios are currently unknown. Although soil organic C is the focus of most soil C cycle research, soils also contain substantial inorganic C stocks. Climate and soil mineral assemblage influence the cycling of both these C reservoirs. Although the processes and mechanisms governing the cycling of these two pools are very different, both represent globally important C reservoirs with unique capacities to influence atmospheric CO2 concentrations and, by extension, feedbacks to global climate." @default.
