- W2895767798 abstract "Association between insects and the thorns of Acacia fistula and A. elatior at Kora, Kenya is described. Hymenoptera other than ants, Diptera and Lepidoptera were found to make use of the large thorns of A. fistula as shelter. A. elatior carried resident ant populations as well. In both these species, Lepidoptera larvae seem to offer ready-made ‘chambers’ to other insects because the moths bore holes through the thorns after eclosion and other insects then move in. The Lepidoptera may have been the connecting link between ants and Acacia trees with large swollen thorns. Myrmecophily and thorns have been discussed with reference to the hypothesis of co-evolution under pressure of predation by browsers, especially giraffes." @default.
