- W2895825429 abstract "Reviewed by: Daniel Rudd: Calling a Church to Justice by Gary B. Agee Lareine-Marie Mosely Daniel Rudd: Calling a Church to Justice. By Gary B. Agee. Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 2017. 138 pp. $16.49. Daniel Rudd: Calling a Church to Justice by Gary B. Agee is part of Liturgical Press's People of God series. The inclusion of Rudd in this series is a judicious choice because of the significance of the life and activism of this nineteenth- and twentieth- century black Catholic layman. Gary Agee has successfully captured the spirit of Rudd, whose heartfelt belief that the Catholic Church affirmed that all God's children are sisters and brothers sustained him throughout his life. For [End Page 94] this reason, Rudd believed that the Catholic Church was the logical home for other black Americans, especially those who had recently been emancipated. His newspaper, The American Catholic Tribune (ACT) was the primary vehicle Rudd used to showcase the church's aspirational self-understanding. Nevertheless, this did not stop him from challenging the church to live up to its calling by disavowing every form of discrimination aimed at black people, especially black Catholics. Agee also skillfully showed the many ways Rudd navigated in his relationships with bishops and priests who at times believed they knew what was best for black Catholics. Daniel Arthur Rudd was born into slavery in 1854. He was ten years old when the Emancipation Proclamation freed him and all the enslaved. After the sudden death of his father, Daniel was sent to live with his older brother in Springfield, Ohio. There he received his formal education. After the completion of high school Rudd found jobs to earn a living—even moving to Columbus for a time for better job prospects. In 1881 Rudd took an interest in politics in Springfield as a means of bettering the lot of his community. Rudd understood himself to be sent to call both church and society to justice. Despite his interest in politics, he gravitated toward journalism and saw his potential for influencing hearts and minds through his newspaper. In 1892 the ACT distributed 10,000 copies in the Midwest and eastern United States. Daniel Rudd effectively used the ACT as an instrument of evangelization. These pages were filled with articles about the Colored Catholic Congresses that Rudd played a leading role in organizing and that continue to this day. There were also articles about important happenings in the African diaspora. Rudd used the ACT to promote the Catholic Church's openness to all God's people. Augustus Tolton, the first U.S. black priest was featured in one edition, and after the promulgation of Leo XIII's encyclical, Rerum Novarum, Rudd published it in installments thus proving the Catholic Church's interest and concern in social issues. [End Page 95] In numerous ways, Daniel Rudd was a Renaissance man. His interests and gifts were many. He seemed to have never stopped believing in what the Catholic Church could be for the black community and all in need. Agee also displays Rudd's concerns for the full humanity of all women and men. This was evident in his interest in the promotion of the well-being of women, the Irish in search of self-rule, and the eradication of lynching. While in his mid-fifties Rudd moved to Mississippi, where he was the manager at a lumber mill. Later he would relocate to Arkansas, where he continued his work at a lumber mill and also published the biography of African American millionaire, Scott Bond. During these years Rudd occasionally represented black Catholics at various gatherings. In 1932 Rudd suffered a stroke and returned to Kentucky to convalesce. He would die the following year. Daniel Rudd's life was remarkable because of his strong and uncanny understanding that the church is the People of God. He was the church and his devotion to God and promotion of social justice make him a fine example for the People of God today who are no strangers to fear-mongering, racism, and economic disparity.
