- W2895831358 abstract "The drilling of very large numbers of small holes in the leading edges of wing skins can permit the control of the laminar flow there by means of suction through the wing skin. There have been wing “gloves” with arrays of laser-drilled holes prepared by Boeing for subsonic and supersonic test aircraft for NASA tests. There needs to be continued improvement in the process of laser drilling to make more efficient the manufacturing of perforated wings with better quality and consistency. In the PLM TRP one task that Boeing is investigating is the drilling potential of the PLM diode-pumped Neodymium lasers. To begin, small holes have beendrilled with a GE lamp-pumped laser representative of the best of that type. Additional drilling tests have been conducted with the preliminary versions of the TRW PLM diode-pumped lasers. The goal is to produce consistent holes having diameters at one end of 25 μm. To try to identify a way of controlling the hole size and taper, the laser repetition rates and the pulse lengths were varied, with up to 140 pulses used to drill a single hole through a 1040 μm thick titanium alloy sheet. Attention was paid to operation just above the threshold regime in accumulated energy where 95% predictable perforation was possible. Evaluations of the laser-drilled holes show that the statistical variability of the hole diameters already can be significantly reduced by an optimum selection of process parameters, but process improvements still must be sought to drill holes smaller by a factor of 2.The drilling of very large numbers of small holes in the leading edges of wing skins can permit the control of the laminar flow there by means of suction through the wing skin.
