- W2895832219 abstract "In this excellent book, Helen Boyles explores the ambivalent relationship of Methodism with literary Romanticism. This fertile topic has been ignored for over fifty years, in contrast, for example, with the attention devoted to Unitarianism’s relationship with Romanticism. At the outset, Boyles cites Lamb’s perception of ‘a kind of “Natural Methodism”’ in The Excursion, to which, he admits, readers might ‘object’ (p. 1). In her first two chapters, Boyles outlines the biographical and historical contexts of John Wesley’s mission, and introduces the critical issues she will pursue in subsequent chapters on Robert Southey and S. T. Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and William Hazlitt. The cultural milieu of Enlightenment rationalism was inimical to Methodism’s ‘affective theology’, and the language of popular religious enthusiasm offended educated taste (p. 15). John Wesley proclaimed a faith of the heart and affections, but maintained that religion has a rational foundation. He describes ‘genuine faith’ as ‘a daily growth in that pure and holy religion which the world always did and always will call enthusiasm’; such faith is sustained, Wesley contends, through ‘the ordinary channels’ of ‘grace’ (p. 21). John and Charles Wesley retained lifelong loyalty to their Anglican background, while promoting radically unorthodox methods of ministry. John Wesley advocated stylistic ideals of simplicity and restraint in preaching, although his followers often adopted extravagant, histrionic modes. Such enthusiastic discourse was associated with feminine sensibility and, for critics of Methodism, reflected its ‘emasculating influence’ (p. 35)." @default.
