- W2895952707 abstract "Sociocultural theories, in particular that of Vygotsky, have exerted a significant influence on educators (Moll, 1990), including those concerned with literacy instruction (Hiebert, 1991). Interest in sociocultural theory has increased as the emphasis in psychology and sociology has shifted from earlier forms of constructivism to social constructivism (Mehan, 1981). One of the chief differences between the two forms is whether the constructive process is seen as largely internal and personal or social and interpersonal. The work of Piaget assumes the former; the work of Vygotsky, the latter. The first half of this chapter presents a discussion of sociocultural theory and literacy learning (for other accounts, refer to Gavelek, 1986; Goodman & Goodman, 1990; McCarthey & Raphael, 1989). The second half describes research conducted at the Kamehameha Elementary Education Program (KEEP), an example of an elementary reading/language arts program influenced by the sociocultural perspective (Tharp & Gallimore, 1988)." @default.
