- W2895968858 abstract "In Italy there is an increasing in elderly people with dementia in NH; the disease is associated with behavioural symptoms (BPSD), that represent a major burden both to the person with dementia and to the family and staff. A number of observational studies have reported benefits from multidomain caring programmes implemented nursing home that include the presence of trainedcaregivers and staff, the use of psychosocial interventions, a prothesic physical environment, family involvement and staff training.Challenging behavior exhibited by pWD can have adverse outcomes, like stress and low work satisfaction for nursing staff in long-term care settings. Training nursing staff to manage challenging behaviour may reduce its impact. Although much of the research into training nursing staff shows inconsistency results on Pwd wellbeing and on nursing staff stress or burnout. Our prospective cohort study analyzed the effects of a care programme regarding to psychological tailored interventions for challenging behaviour on staff burnout and on quality of life of PWD living in Nursing Home. The staff training program involved 20 nursing-home and 666 professionals. Main contents regarded BPSD management (PCC model) and psychosocial interventions for challenging behaviours. The training ended with a project task for nursing-home staff to improve quality of life in PWD. The primary outcome was: knowledge about challenging behaviour of staff and their effects on quality of life and improvement of BPSD of resident (N=192). We analyzed BPSD thanks to NPI . Secondary outcome was stress experienced by nursing staff (N = 666) that analyzed with Maslach scale .Nursing staff could not be blinded to the intervention, but were blinded for the outcomes. In spite of some dropouts our analysis described an improvement, not statistical significant, in staff burnout after training in emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment and depersonalization subscale. We saw most evident results on client challenging behaviour; in particular on improving of NPI score (p=0,000). This study shows that psychosocial interventions and staff training are able to make a difference on the quality of care and life of people with dementia and could reduce staff and caregivers stress. There is need for further studies to confirm these observations." @default.
