- W2896009627 abstract "Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder [1]. AD is not only a medical, but also a socio-economic and legal issue. Escalating AD symptoms leads to the exclusion of affected individuals from society, which leads to depriving them of the possibility of participating in political, social or economic life [2]. The factors causing such social exclusion are connected with the status of patients, relations with caregivers and society. The aim of our research was to investigate the opinion of medical staff about the factors affecting the social exclusion of a person with AD. The study group consisted of 198 members of the medical doctors’ profession, including 101 students from Poland and abroad as well as 97 laboratory diagnosticians and doctors with different specializations. Each respondent filled in survey questionnaire, which consisted of five questions concerning different factors that cause the social exclusion of patients with AD. We have shown that according to the trial the most serious factor associated with patients that causes the social exclusion of patients with AD was the loss of the ability to show their needs. Concerning factors associated with a caregiver, there has been a large variety of answers. The three most common answers were: professional status, degree of kinship and relations with the patient. As far as the factors associated with society, respondents chose the two most significant ones: social awareness and alienation caused by the disease progression. Our research has shown that there are several factors leading to the social exclusion of patients with AD. According to the medical staff the most important are: communication problems, degree of caregiver's workload, level of kinship or relationship, knowledge about AD and disease progression.
