- W2896054171 abstract "Innovative techniques are used to repair cardiac valves. The Nd-YAG laser is able to selectively vaporize calcified tissue. These studies were performed to determine whether the Nd-YAG could decalcify the valve without damaging it. Seven human calcified valves were exposed to multiple bursts of 40 watt-second with the Nd-YAG laser. After removal of the calcium the valves were examined histologically. The YAG was able to decalcify all of the valves studied. There was no instance of gross perforation. Histologically the endothelium was removed overlying the calcium but there was no perforation or tissue necrosis. It is concluded that the Nd-YAG laser is able to precisely remove calcium from cardiac valves.Innovative techniques are used to repair cardiac valves.
