- W2896311053 abstract "To continue making progress in treating Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and related dementias, healthy and diseased brains are needed for autopsy. Brain donation is important to confirm clinical diagnosis and to provide tissue samples for AD and related dementia research. Yet rates of brain donation in the US are historically low, hampering research progress. HealthStreet, a community engagement program of the University of Florida, sends Community Health Workers (CHWs) into the community to assess community members’ health needs and interest in research, to refer to health promoting activities and services, and to match interest with available health research studies. Among 3,076 adults (18 and over) enrolled as HealthStreet members, 66% were female, 52% were African American and 43% Caucasian, 9% were Hispanic ethnicity, 34% were employed and 11% were veterans. Average age of the females was 47; males 48. Overall, 61% said they were likely to donate their brain for research with 23% endorsing being somewhat likely and 38% endorsing being likely to donate their brains. No difference by sex in likelihood to donate was found. As average age increased, males were significantly more likely to donate; there was no difference observed in females. A smaller percentage of African-Americans endorsed being likely to donate (22%) than Caucasians (52%). In this community engaged population from over 30 counties throughout Florida, more than 6 out of 10 participants indicated they were open to the possibility of brain donation (somewhat likely to likely to donate). Our findings indicate a much greater openness to discussing and participating in brain donation among the general population than is generally assumed to be true. Research teams should provide older adults with the opportunity to consider brain donation as a choice." @default.
