- W2896436215 abstract "Over 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia. Estimates suggest that dementia affects the lives of 3-5 family members of each person with the disease. Family stressors commonly associated with dementia include: grief and loss related to personhood, function, and family relationships; the addition of caregiving responsibilities to already busy family life; shifts in family structure, authority, and other dynamics; untimely interruptions of normal family life cycle tasks; financial hardship; and strained family relationships. Published estimates of conflict in families dealing with dementia range from 54% to 82%. The emotional and financial costs of family conflict are high and increase exponentially as the person with dementia approaches the end of life. Medical family therapy is the application of systems theory in the form of a biopsychosocial systems approach to conducting psychotherapy with patients and their families who experience physical health problems, including illness, trauma, or disability. This presentation will provide participants with: a description of a university-based memory disorders clinic with a multidisciplinary, integrated care model that includes medical family therapy; a description of the frequency and wide range of presenting problems from over 400 families seen for family therapy; an overview of medical family therapy principles and interventions that are most applicable to dementia patients, caregivers, and families; and an overview of the unique clinical, ethical, and practice considerations involved in treating this vulnerable population. This presentation will provide medical, behavioral health, and social service providers with a broader understanding of the far-reaching impact that a neurocognitive disorder can have not only on the person with the diagnosis, but also on the family, community, and health and social service systems that may both support and hinder the family's illness and caregiving experiences." @default.
