- W2896489966 abstract "In 2017, Congress allocated 1.4 billion dollars for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) research with the hopes of finding a prevention, treatment, or cure (Alzheimer's Association, 2017). The promise of ADRD research is contingent on research participation, but historically, trials struggle to recruit and retain eligible participants (Carlise et al., 2015; Grille & Galvin, 2014). To effectively utilize this historic funding, efforts to increase participation in clinical trials are needed. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Culture of Health framework, which encourages social sectors to engage with the health sector to illuminate previously unseen connections and determine community needs, can be used to elucidate motivational strategies to improve research participation in the ADRD community (Well, 2016). Interdisciplinary academic literature was reviewed; topics included clinical research participation, civic engagement, blood donation, public service, knowledge mobilization, and organizational theory. Two themes were identified: individual and community-level needs and motivations, and organization, health system, and environmental factors that facilitate or impede clinical trial enrollment. Current ethical and safety research regulations were also incorporated into the framework. An eight-element Culture of Research framework was established and organized into four action areas gleaned from the original. Research can become a shared value through civic engagement and organizational role design. Cross-sector collaboration can be fostered through through policy incentives and multi-sector partnerships. Safe and equitable research communities can be created through standard regulations and education to prevent unintended exclusion and promote equity. Research and research services can be strengthened by increasing the level and quality of communication and access to opportunities. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Culture of Health framework can be modified into a Culture of Research framework to organize motivational strategies. Implementing this strategy could improve clinical trial enrollment, particularly in the ADRD community. The application of this conceptual framework will be tested this year through my dissertation research on clinical trial enrollment in the younger-onset ADRD population." @default.
