The amount of energy coupled into the powder results in a melt pool that can be observed by detecting its thermal emission. The demonstrated sensor system acquires information during processing through the optical train of a scanner based manufacturing system for selective laser melting. The coaxially coupled detection system uses a pyrometer to detect radiation from the melt pool and determines the current position of the laser beam. A real time processing system which makes use of a field programmable gate array (FPGA), combines measured values from both sources. Post processing the acquired measurement values allows gaining an insight into the course of the melting process.
