- W2896511837 abstract "Hippocampal atrophy seen on MRI is a neuroimaging marker for the prediction of Alzheimer's disease. Meanwhile, Aluminum is considered to play a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease but the linkage is not well established. The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between serum aluminum concentration and hippocampal atrophy as a marker of neurodegeneration prior to Alzheimer's disease. Blood sampling including aluminium and 3.0T brain MRI are performed in 561 cognitive normal (CN) community dwelling elderly subjects aged over 60 years. We applied multiple linear regression model to evaluated correlation. Higher level of serum aluminum is related with hippocampal volume reduction (β=-6.62, SE 2.71, p-value <0.05) after adjusting age, sex, intracranial volume (ICV). Such a tendency is consistent (β=-7.85, SE 2.79, p-value <0.01) after additional adjustment for known Alzheimer risk factors (BMI, smoking, alcohol, hypertension, diabetes, exercise). Beta coefficients for right (β=-8.33, SE=3.21, p-value<0.05) and left hippocampal volume (β=-7.66, SE 2.68, p-value<0.01) are both statistically significant. For men, negative correlation is seen all in average, right and left hippocampus. Conversely, this relationship is only found on left hemisphere for women (β=-7.09, SE=3.62, p-value=0.5).
