- W2896550491 abstract "Consensus reports identify physical activity (PA) as the most consistent factor with potential to prevent or delay onset of Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias (ADRD). However, we lack information from detailed objective measures of physical activity. Additionally, there is a dearth of research on the role of high volumes of time spent sedentary (e.g. sitting/lying at low energy expenditures) on the risk for ADRD. The Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) study recently added objective monitors to measure sitting and standing time in addition to physical activity to support future work to understand the relationship between detailed patterns of PA and sedentary time and ADRD risk and resilience in advanced old age. ACT Study participants undergo biennial assessments and were re-consented to wear two devices that measure physical activity, sitting and standing time beginning in April 2016. The waist worn Actigraph was used to objectively measure light, moderate, and vigorous intensity physical activity. The thigh-worn activPAL was deployed to objectively measure sitting, standing, and stepping time as well as sit-to-stand transitions and prolonged (30 minute or longer) bouts of sitting. The activPAL was secured with a waterproof dressing so that it could be worn 24 hours per day while Actigraph was secured on a belt worn at the waist. Participants kept a wear log and completed self-reported surveys assessing sedentary and active behaviors. Both devices were worn for one week and returned by mail. Processing algorithms are being developed using R software. Of 1593 people invited to participate, 878 (55.1%) consented to wear both devices (mean age = 77.3, range = 65 to 100, % female = 56.4, % white = 90.2). The main reason for refusal was lack of interest followed by poor health, travel, and cognitive problems. The initial round of data collection will be complete in April 2018. It is feasible to collect detailed objective measures of physical activity and sedentary time in older adults, including those up to age 100. The novel data being collected will help further elucidate associations between sitting, standing, and PA patterns and risk for ADRD." @default.
