- W2896656667 abstract "This chapter presents principles, advantages, and limits of X-ray computed microtomography (microCT) in applications related to paleoanthropology, archaeology, and cultural heritage. In particular, the state of the art of such techniques in the nondestructive microstructural characterization of different types of ancient human remains and artifacts is discussed, together with possible radiation effects that could hinder genetic and dating analyses. In paleoanthropology, microCT imaging can be applied to digitally restore skulls, produce virtual high-resolution endocasts, investigate biomechanical properties of different anatomical parts, or reveal dental microstructures. Promising fields of microCT application in archaeology are the study of archaeozoological remains, pottery technology, clay plasters, projectile impact marks, and the virtual unrolling and reading of fragile deteriorated manuscripts. MicroCT has also been successfully applied to characterize stained glass windows of European cathedrals and bowed stringed instruments." @default.
