- W2896742811 abstract "Ageing populations present challenges for acute care settings around the world. A recent UK report found that 65% of hospital patients are aged 65 years and older, 30% of whom live with dementia (Cracks in the Pathway, 2014). A US cohort study found that those with dementia are twice as likely to be admitted to hospital than those without dementia, controlled for age (Phelan et al., 2012). Lack of continuity of care and environmental change commonly yield increased agitation, anxiety, and trouble communicating in a hospital setting. However, group arts programmes have been shown to decrease anxiety and increase wellbeing in older patients, especially those with dementia (Staricoff, 2004). Efforts have been undertaken to understand tablet use for reminiscence dementia care in community settings (Upton, Upton, Jones, Jutla, & Brooker, 2011). However, little is known about how digital, tablet-based versions of arts in health programmes compare with traditional versions in acute care settings. This study used ethnographic observation and semi-structured interviews to gain understanding of the process and effects of traditional and digital media use in arts in health programmes for hospital inpatients with dementia. Ethnographic observation of 17 programmes took place over a period of 3 months. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 patient participants and 8 clinical staff. Detailed observations describe the implementation and impact of arts in health programmes in a challenging hospital setting. This includes descriptions of working relationships between programme leaders and clinical staff and the flexible approach necessary to implementing programmes in an unpredictable environment. Patient reactions to digital and traditional arts in health programmes are explored and tied to theories of dementia care, experience of dementia, and psychological impacts of art making. The study describes elements of patient experience of arts in health programmes in general, then analyses differences between traditional and digital media. Recommendations are then made regarding implementation of digital versus traditional arts in health programmes for dementia. Depending on group size and patient personality, either may provide a stimulating, engaging activity that can enhance feelings of self-efficacy in hospital inpatients with dementia." @default.
