- W2896779415 abstract "The cigar distribution of suprathermal electrons (40–200 keV), showing electron pitch angles primarily in the parallel and anti-parallel directions, has been frequently observed in the terrestrial magnetotail. The formation of such a distribution is typically attributed to Fermi acceleration, betatron cooling, or a combination of these. To date, Fermi acceleration has been well studied via both observations and simulations, while betatron cooling has not been verified directly. In this study, we focus on the betatron cooling of suprathermal electrons. By analyzing a unique case observed by the Cluster spacecraft in the Earth's magnetotail (XGSM ≈ −15 RE), we find a significant drop of electron flux in association with the decrease of magnetic field strength, i.e., a magnetic dip. This magnetic dip is formed due to the expansion of flux tubes driven by two opposite flows. The drop in electron flux, primarily in the perpendicular direction, is therefore strong evidence of betatron cooling. We successfully reproduce these processes using an analytical model." @default.
