- W2896798479 abstract "Despite being the age group at highest risk of dementia and the fastest growing segment of the population, norms for neuropsychological tests in the oldest-old are scanty and often based on small samples of selected subjects. Objective: to provide normative data for the oldest-old on commonly used neuropsychological tests from population-based studies. The population ranged between 711 to 2548 nondemented subjects 65 years and older from three population-based studies (the Monzino 80-plus, Health and Anemia, Moltrasio) and a previous normative study (Lugli 2001-2002). During first visit, patients were administered the CERAD neuropsychological battery in a standardized manner by experienced psychologists. The battery assesses the principal cognitive areas affected in dementia/AD. Linear multivariable regression analysis was used to assess the effect of age (continuous), education (continuous), sex and main occupation (manual workers, crafts and trades, professionals and clerks, others) on each neuropsychological test. Depending on the number of subjects to whom each test was administered, the mean age of the population ranged between 81.6 and 86.2 years (N: 65-69y: 38-284; 70-74y: 31-309; 75-79y: 31-355; 80-84y: 274-549; 85-89y: 208-650; 90-94y: 115-353; 95-99y: 19-107; 100+y: 10-87) and the mean education between 5.9 and 7.1 years; percentage of women oscillated between 61.6% and 68.2%. The Table shows the mean (SD) scores on CERAD neuropsychological test battery (in the overall population and in three oldest-old age groups) together with the effect of the variables entered into the analyses on each test. No significant association was observed for the main occupation, while sex had a significant effect only on the Short Boston Naming test and Recall of Constructional Praxis. Worse scores on all neuropsychological tests were significantly associated with increasing age and decreasing number of years of schooling." @default.
